Extra Training at Llani Dojo
2nd extra training session of the year, great turnout great day! :)
On Saturday 16th at Llanidloes dojo the 2nd Extra Training session of 2013 took place with 2 sessions junior and senior. Students from Llanidloes, Presteigne & Rhayader dojo’s travelled to attend, I am really grateful for the support it really is appreciated that you all made the effort to attend.
The first session was for the juniors and we covered Heian Shodan for the lower grades, Heian Yondan & Godan for the intermediate grades and Kosokun Dai for the higher grades. Each group was assisted by the 1st Dan Black belts who helped the students with the learning process, which is great for the students to receive the same message from someone different. We have a great group of black belts which is steadily growing in numbers!
The junior session ended with some sparring drills which was a lot of fun, watching the students rise to the challenge of a bit of competitive sparring was inspiring.
Well done to the following for training hard: Billy Jones, Poppy Jones, Patrick Somervaille, Louis Whitehead, Mark Russell, from Presteigne dojo. Adam Corfield, Luke Corfield, Lewis Gamble, Molly Gamble, Ryan Woosnam, Thomas Woosnam, Ceri Roberts, Iwan Roberts, Joshua Peck, Daniel Moss, Bethany Moss, Joe Thompson, Ryan Stephens, Abbie Robins, D’yani Hinds-Williams, Sam Webster, Kristian Frantz-Morgans, Josh Frantz-Morgans, Thomas Dam, Adam Lawrence, Ross Evans from Llanidloes dojo. Thomas Skipsey, Iwan Blakeway, Rhodri Blakeway, Lucy Naylor, Daniel Hilliard, Oskar Lydon, Jessie Hazell from Rhayader dojo.Straight after the junior session we held the black belt only session. It is a great opportunity for the 1st Dan black belts to get together and train, and to spend some time going deeper into karate that is not always available in class. So for this session we covered Basai-Dai and Seipai kata, which are listed in our syllabus for 2nd Dan so they could go away and have something to work on. I am really enjoying the black belt session it is a great opportunity to train and discuss all parts of karate and get differing opinions. Seipai kata proved to be a good workout mentally for the 1st Dan’s!!
Thanks to our 1st Dan black belts Neil, Debbie, Martha, Joe, Dan, Simon and George for their help with the juniors and for a great black belt session.
The next extra training sessions will be held at Rhayader dojo on Saturday 8th June. I hope that the brown & black belts return the favour of attending this session as shown by the brown & blacks of Presteigne & Rhayader dojo who attended the Llanidloes session.
See you on the next one!

Iain Abernethy Seminar
Write up of the seminar at Presteigne Dojo February 2013

It’s the third time Presteigne dojo has hosted Iain Abernethy for a seminar, and once again Iain delivered a great session.
I was humbled to see familiar faces return again and it was fantastic to meet new people who travelled considerable miles to support the event. I thank you all for making it a great atmosphere and session.
There were mixed abilities and some first timers attending but Iain successfully catered for everyone at all levels, which is a mark of Iain’s abillity as an internationl instructor.
The session was packed full of content which lead seemlessly from one topic to another but also all linked in for progression. We covered hand grips, playing for grips, and throws that appear in the writings of the past founders of karate but have seemed to have been dropped off most syllabuses in karate (apart from ours!).
Once again the session flew by and we were out of time, which is another testament of a good seminar!
I would like to thank my students for attending, Neil & Sam Webster, Mark & Courtney Russell, Martha Williams, Simon McDade, Dave Thompson, Sam Spedding, Lucy Naylor, Daniel Hilliard and George Taylor, you did yourselves, your club and your instructor proud.
A personal thank you to my friend and training partner Sensei Alan Turner who attended with some of his students - he created the picture of the day!Thank you Iain and thank you all for a great day. See you on the next one!!
