1st Lee Taylor Karate Seminar
Write up of our 1st annual seminar with guest instructors.
Sunday 21st October saw the first annual Lee Taylor Karate seminar also celebrating our first year together, with guest instructors and very good friends, Kai & Sarah Wilson of Unite Tae Kwon Do & Fitness, and Mick Tully of Complete Self Protection. And of course there was me too!Students from all 3 clubs made the journey to Kington Leisure Centre to support the event, and I would like to thank all of them personally and for the parents who brought them, and then had to find something to do for 4 hours!!
Yes it was a mamoth 4 hour seminar for the students with a little break, crammed full of martial arts from top instructors. I was very impressed with the juniors with their stamina through the seminar well done!
The seminar was split into 3 x 50 minute sessions with a break after the second session, with one more after the break to finish off the day. The groups were adults & teenagers senior grade, children senior grade, and children junior grade rotating around the 3 instructors.
Mick (assisted by Graham Mackenzie one of his students) taught the martial art of Kali (sticks!) Showing the similarities between moves from karate and kali. As I know from experience this makes your brain ache when there is a stick in your hand and you have to co-ordinate it with movements. But it looked and sounded like great fun was had by all.
Many thanks to Mick & Graham who came over from Milton Keynes to support the event.
Kai & Sarah (assisted by Terry Neil) delivered a full on kicking session, putting together some great combinations for the students to try on the paddles (a new piece of equipment I have been told buy for the clubs!) as well as some specific kicks found in Tae Kwon Do, which I expect the students to show me back at the clubs.
Many thanks to Kai, Sarah & Terry who came over from Kidderminster to support the event.
Then there was my section, I taught bunkai applications to being grabbed on the lapel to the juniors, and bunkai from the kata Annanko to the seniors and how they can be used individually to end the situation, or can flow from one to another if the situation changes. Good understanding of the principles to the bunkai were shown by the juniors and seniors, it was good fun being hit by the juniors!
I would like to thank my wife Nyree and Deb Webster for providing some fantastic cakes for the break, I did manage to get 1, they were very popular.
The day went very quickly and at the end the instructors had chosen particular students that had given that little bit more during the sessions and they were given prizes for their effort. All the students performed brilliantly and represented their clubs and the group with pride, receiving great feedback from Kai & Mick on how they applied themselves and trained throughout the seminar. Well done to you all, I am very proud to be your instructor!
Once again thank you all for your support of Rhayader, Llanidloes & Presteigne clubs, and of the group as a whole. It is really appreciated. I hope you had as much fun as I did and cant wait for next years!
